Neuroradiology

Neuroradiology is the medical subspecialty in radiology that plays an essential role in the diagnosis and treatment of brain, spinal cord, head and neck, and vascular lesions using x-rays, MRI, radio waves, and ultrasound. Each day, these subspecialty physicians are consulted many times by neurologists, internists, neurosurgeons, radiation therapists, and other professionals who seek guidance in the interpretation of neuroimaging studies. Early diagnosis allows the treating physician to accurately counsel the patient and start the best therapy at the earliest possible time. Neuroradiologists are highly trained physicians who are critical members of the diagnostic and treatment team assisting patients with neurological disorders such as diagnose stroke, tumor, genetic conditions, aneurysms, Alzheimer's disease, and many other causes of neurological dysfunction at an early stage. Following medical school their training, known as residency, entails four rigorous years of supervised practice using CT, MRI, X-ray and Ultrasound.  Following radiology residency, the neuroradiologist undergoes two additional years of fellowship training under the supervision of trained neuroradiologists. Certification for practice called certificate of added qualification, includes a day of oral examinations.
